Why is Populore different?
As a small business, we can afford you and your project invaluable personal attention. With confidentiality and respect for your words and vision, we'll work with you throughout the whole process. We'll combine your wishes with our expertise to create an attractive, professional book with a much more personal, friendly rapport than you might find at a larger company.

Where is Populore located?
After ten years occupying the historic Phillip H. Keck house (built in 1855) in Westover, West Virginia, we begin our twenty-second year of business across town — still near the Monongahela River, but now a little farther north. We are about an hour south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and about three hours west of Washington, D.C. Our offices are located only 1.5 miles from Interstate 79, Exit 155.

I'm not from the Morgantown area or even West Virginia. Is that a problem?
Not at all. About half of our clients are "local"—the other half are from out of state, scattered throughout the United States. Thanks to snail mail, e-mail, and phone correspondence our long-distance client communication is just as smooth as that with our local clients. Client access to and familiarity with e-mail is the most helpful factor. Even interviewing can be conducted over the phone.

I want my book to be really special, creative, and one-of-a-kind. Is this possible?
Of course! One book definition we really like is "any number of written or printed sheets when bound or sewed together along one edge, usually between protective covers." Nowhere in the definition does it stipulate what must go on between its covers. It doesn't even have to be words and writing; rather you can bind together photographs and images of art, and so much more. At Populore, we love books because of their infinite possibilites. We have experience and great success working with clients on unique, design-intensive books. We're happy to talk to you about your ideas.

If you help me publish my book, does that mean Populore owns the copyright?
No. One of the benefits of using Populore's publishing services is that you maintain the rights to your book. And, if you wish to market and sell your books commercially, you will stand to keep any profit.

What if the ghostwriter puts something I don't like in the manuscript?
We'll show you at least two drafts throughout the process for your changes, additions, and response. You and the writer will work closely together with questions and suggestions for one another. We will not send any manuscript to the printer and binder until you have given it your final approval.

How much does a book publishing project cost?
This is always a difficult and delicate question because there are so many different stories out there and so many different ways to put them in book form. Each of our clients has had his or her own unique needs and wishes. Basically, your project could cost as little as $500 and as much as thousands when all is said and done (considering printing and binding, etc.). The only way for you to decide whether or not a project fits within your budget is to touch base with Populore and tell us what you have in mind. We're happy to talk to you in a free initial consultation, give you a preliminary cost estimate (followed by a more formal estimate), and suggest cost-cutting strategies for each step of the process.

Just one more note about cost: A publishing project is an investment. That is, it is an initially expensive undertaking for many people, but its benefits outweigh those costs in the long run. Some people could publish completely on their own, but it's a matter of time, knowledge, industry savvy, and motivation. (Most people go to the grocery store rather than farming their own food. When you want to build a house, you call an architect and a contractor. When you want to sell that house, you call a realtor.) By asking Populore to assist you in the process, chances are your project will be completed in a shorter period of time than if you did it yourself. We know what materials and strategies will give the best quality and price for your particular needs. We're educated and experienced in writing, editing, design, and project management. And—perhaps most importantly—we'll keep you motivated, keep the project moving forward, and insure that it reaches completion. That's the Populore touch.

How long will it take?
Again, this of course depends on the scope of your project. Most of our projects take at least four to six months from the beginning of the project until the books are delivered to your front door. Generally, the more complex the project, the longer it will take. One good way to save time (and, thus, money) is to give us materials (e.g., text and photos) "batched" versus piecemeal. Also, we are happy to accommodate your needs throughout the process, but the closer you stick to the initial project agreement and don't change your mind on big things, the smoother and quicker the progress.

I've already started—I've written a little bit, or I've been interviewed in the past—but I don't know what to do next. Is it too late for your help?
At Populore, we'll help you with what you need. If interviewing is already taken care of, we can assist you with writing, design, and production. If you have most things under control, but would like some advice about photograph selection or assistance with printing and binding, we'd be happy to help you make the right decision. If you have nothing but an idea, we'll help you get started and work with you from beginning to end. We'll provide motivation, organization, and help to show you what you can do with what you have.

Where will any interviewing take place?
Generally, we've found that clients are comfortable meeting the interviewer and/or writer in our office. It's a quiet environment, free of distractions. In some cases, we have interviewed clients in their homes or other convenient meeting places. If you are not located near the Morgantown/Westover area, we can come to you.
